Textile Conservation
Fabric of Life provides for the care and preservation of a wide variety of antique and contemporary textiles based on scientific principles. A textile conservator understands the underlying factors that cause the degradation of textiles. Conservation treatment is aimed at stabilizing any damaged or weakened aspects of the textile and providing display and storage solutions to help ensure future preservation.

Professional conservation enables objects of beauty, interest, sentimental value and cultural significance to be enjoyed by present and future generations. Conservation practice in Australia is governed by a Code of Ethics for professional practice through the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM). You can find out more about the AICCM here.

Many of us have significant textiles to care for. We may have collected textiles while traveling, been given them by a family member or acquired them ourselves. We may be responsible for the care of a museum collection. Textiles are particularly vulnerable to damage through neglect or mishandling.

Mary Jose, the owner of the Fabric of Life, has served museums, galleries, private institutions and collectors since 1984 both in Australia, Asia and the UK. Fabric of Life provides for the care and presentation of a wide variety of antique and contemporary textile arts.

Mary trained at the Textile Conservation Centre, Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London following a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Fine Art at the Australian National University. She is a Professional Associate of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural material.
